Caring for your pet should include dental hygiene.  Our pets are living longer, therefore it is important for us to help them retain their healthy teeth through proper hygiene.

Feeding your pet hard dog food is the first step towards healthier teeth. Soft foods can become lodged between their teeth, creating problems as it begins to break down the enamel on your pet’s teeth.  Hard kibble not only deters tooth decay, but it also gives your pet the chewing exercises he craves.

Several times a week you should physically brush your pet’s teeth. There are several good products on the market, both brushes and pastes, that are excellent in killing the bacteria that breaks down the tooth enamel.  Do not forget to gently brush the tongue to help rid it of bacteria buildup also. There is no real need to purchase state of the art equipment to give your pet good dental hygiene.  A small child’s soft tooth brush and simple baking soda with be just as effective.

Gently brushing the teeth in all directions and rinsing well with clean water is a sufficient way to keep your pet’s teeth in healthy condition.

Lastly, giving your pet a healthy chewing choice creates good teeth habits.  There are several chewing products on the market today that are specifically made for teeth health. Using these chew products should be part of your overall dental hygiene plan for your pet.

There are also some very upscale grooming salons for pets that also provide this service to its customers. Understand however, that if they find your pet has dental issues, they would not be able to perform any treatment. You would have to schedule a visit to your veterinarian for help.

If your pet should develop an offensive breath, there is a good chance that they have developed a tooth decay problem.  A good veterinarian that practices small animal dental health should be able to diagnose and treat your pet’s dental issues.
