If you have kids, then naturally you want them to be as healthy as possible. Their dental hygiene and health is just as important as their bodily health, but while many parents will rush a kid to a doctor at the first sign of a cough or sniffle, many do not take the same amount of care when it comes to dental hygiene. Proper nutrition for children plays a big role in giving your kids a healthy mouth; therefore, explaining to your kids what they should and should not eat is crucial. Coincidentally, a lot of the principles of nutrition for dental hygiene are identical to principles of nutrition for general health. Teeth are tough. They are covered with enamel – the hardest substance in the human body. But while enamel can resist a lot, it is not invulnerable. Sugar is the prime enemy of healthy teeth and will eat through enamel if neglected. Even if you brush regularly, too much sugar can still result in cavities. Therefore, the first thing you should do is control how much sugar your kids take in daily. Try to avoid giving your kids candy that lasts a while – like a lollipop, for example. The longer this type of candy is in the mouth, the more damage it can do. (If you want an alternative, let your kids chew sugarless gum. It will actually help clean your mouth.) Also, do not let your children drink a lot of carbonated beverages, which are usually high in sugar. These drinks also stay on the teeth and really go to work on the teeth.
So, it is clear that you should limit the amount of foods that are high in sugar that your children consume. There are foods, though, that are actually good for your teeth. Celery is one of the best foods you can consume, not just for dental health but for health in general. The tough, crisp material packed with fiber can greatly assist in cleaning the teeth, especially food particles that are in between the teeth and hard to reach. Apples are great as well, even though they have some sugar in them. Drinking milk is also a great idea, because it is loaded with calcium, the material that comprises your teeth and bones. Drinking milk really does make your bones and teeth stronger; just remember to get your children to brush or rinse after drinking a glass so it does not stay on the teeth.
Proper nutrition is important to anyone, but it is crucial for your kids. Starting them off on the right path early on will ensure that they have pearly whites well into their adult lives.
